Red

I just think of the lamest titles.

I shot this as an assignment for class. I wanted to make use of a simple prop for the model to play with so I chose fabric. I was inspired by Visas, a character in a video game I played years back which was Knights of the Old Republic. When I went to the fabric store, all I wanted was the color red but I forgot I had to keep in mind how I wanted the fabric to drape over the model’s head. So I chose one that was slightly heavier. When I started taking test shots, the photos actually turned out the way I imagined it which was really a nice surprise. I want it to look like she was emerging from the dark. And I didn’t expect the fabric to photograph so well! It reminds me of Greek-sculpture-drapery.

After the shoot, I was wondering why the photo looked so familiar. It wasn’t until critique session when my instructor said it reminded him of the famous Afghan girl photo of National Geographic.

The set up couldn’t be any more simple: just one soft box and a black background.

Myrna Fabon Aquino - Yes, reminds me of the Afghan girl in Nat’l Geo, but her face was showing though.
